St. Nicholas Abbey

St. Nicholas Abbey is one of the island’s oldest surviving plantation buildings. You can visit the rum distillery, learn about its history at the museum (situated in a Jacobean mansion) and grab a bite at the Terrace Café. As of late 2018, you can even enjoy a ride on the heritage railway, which goes through lush woods and around a lake nearby. St. Nicholas is located in St. Peter in the northern part of Barbados, only a 40-minute drive from Bridgetown.

Do & See

Besides beaches and water sports, Bridgetown offers several cultural sights. In 2012, parts of the city centre and the garrison became listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Apart from that, it can be worth considering day trips to the island’s natural gems, such as caves, woods and wildlife reserves. A special occasion is the yearly Crop Over Festival at the beginning of August – when colourful masquerade bands conquer the streets like a carnival.
